Do you have to wear nothing but a hospital gown when you deliver?

April 17th, 2009 | by Rick |
Happy to be her mommy asked:

I’m totally uncomfortable with the idea of not getting to wear a bra or something underneath… I’m not going to make a big fuss about it, if those are the hospital rules, but aren’t there any alternatives to that flimsy paper sheet they give everyone? Not that I will probably care when I go into labor lol just curious.

I beleive I wore my bra, but I can’t remember. If I did i had to take it off to nurse anyway. I can’t see why you cant wear your own night dress or something. No you probably wont care when you go into labor lol

You can wear whatever gown you want to wear. However just a warning birth is very messy and you will mess up your gown.

I wore my regular bra when i delivered and a gown of course. but, if you are planning on ****** feeding, put a nursing bra on if you have a chance. bc trying to ****** feed with a regular bra on and an IV in your arm is very complicated.

I honestly don’t even remember what I was wearing. I could have been completely ***** for all I know. Believe me, it’s not going to matter when the time comes!

Hospitals allow you to bring in your own gown to wear. Just bring a change or two - believe me, you’ll need them.

I believe every hospital is different, but the main reason for the hospital gowns is so that, if need be, they can have full access to your body for IVs, tubes, etc. Anything they might need should something go wrong.

Besides, you’ll get a flimsy cloth gown instead of a paper one. LOL ;)

The hospitals I delivered at required their gown, because it allowed easy access in the event they needed to to an emergency procedure. They aren’t paper gowns, though. They are cotton, and not uncomfortable. They said to remove all underwear, including bra, probably for the same reason. That gown is going to be in pretty bad shape by the time the baby is born. I wouldn’t want that happening to something I have to take home!

they don’t give you the same gown you wear when you go to the doctor… the gown is made more out of a bed sheet material. you probably can wear a bra or a sports bra, i probably will wear one. just make sure it is a nursing bra so you can maneuver better after birth.

i wore my nightie, but on the day or night of labor you’ll be in and out of the bath and will not care what your wearing lol, as long as your comfortable the hospital will respect that, good luck hope all goes well

when i went in to be induced the had me strip everything off from the waist down except socks(they were joking about being able to keep some of my dignity) and also my shirt. So i had the cloth gown, my bra, i wore i sports bra, it was easier to whip it out to ****** feed after having her and my socks.
After i had her and got a shower, i was able to wear my pajama pants but they still had me wear the cloth gown, i found if you are ****** feeding and they give you the ones that open in the back, i turned it around so i didn’t have to take it all the way off just untie it and open up the side you will be feeding on, that way i could still have some coverage especially if its feeding time and you have visitors that are lingering.

    Hope this helped!!

When you deliver I would wear their gowns so you don’t ruin your own! But after delivery you can wear what you want! If its c-section I would wear night gowns because you tend to still slightly bleed and ooze after. I had an emergancy c-section myself!

My delivery was so fast that my husband had to undress me, and he left my panties on… It was a little funny! Anyway, I think that I still had on everything on top. I nursed almost right away. But the hospitals have seen everything and every parts of bodies that you wouldn’t even consider. It really doesn’t matter to them. Just be comfortable.
