What qualifies you for Medicaid at the Hospital?

May 26th, 2009 | by Rick |
Kalissa asked:

My friend is having to stay over night at the hospital right now to be watched and make sure he doesn’t have appendicitis. He makes 15,000 a year. He has no insurance. Will that qualify him for medicaid? If so, will it take care of his stay?

Thanks.
Please provide as much detail as possible as to what he should do.

Medicaid is a program that he would have to apply to the state for and be qualified before he enters the hospital but all states are different. Have him contact the Financial Office of the Hospital and ask them if there is assistance for him. Also if he is recovering from a surgery he can ask the nurse to speak to one of the social services people. Then he can find out right away if he qualifies for assistance. The hospital may have their own special arrangements. Best of luck to you and your friend.

yes, he probably could qualify for some sort of monetary assistance, the only problem is that you have to have the insurance before you go to the hospital. The staff there is first and foremost there to help him so they will figure out what to do and I hope he is ok!!!!

It depends on the area. Areas with a higher cost of living have different qualifications for Medicaid. Your friend needs to talk to the hospital. Many hospitals have programs other than Medicaid for low income workers. The amount owed is negotiated lower based on income. Also, some hospitals have grants to help those who can not pay. Especially, religious hospitals. The good news, always pay a medical center what you can afford. Even if you pay back ten dollars per month they can not collect against your assets. Communication is key. Also, document everything. Keep track of any and all payments as well as copies of bills due. As a last resort you can hire companies to audit medical bills. Ninety percent of all hospital bills have mistakes in the hospitals favor. You can pay the company 300-500 dollars they audit your bills. They have been known to save people thousands. They generally have money back guarantees.

Medicaid is a government run health plan and is dependent on your income. It depends on where you live what the limits are. After he gets out of the hospital, he needs to go to the nearest DSHS or whatever they call welfare in your state and apply for aid. They will find out what he is eligible for and help him through the paperwork.
