where would I find help to get a credit company to stop harassing me for an unfair hospital bill?

My insurance company at the time(2003) insists that the hospital double-billed them, and that they have taken care of it. A year has past and now a new credit company has called and threatened to hurt my credit if I don’t pay.

Call the collector and get their process for disputing the collection. This will buy you some time to get the documentation from the insurance company that shows you were double billed. Try to get all the originals invoices from your hospital stay, as well as a statement from your insurance company to show that you were indeed double billed. You may also want to contact someone from the hospital and see if they can help you resolve this. They could possibly clear it up for you and tell the collection company to release the debt. Once you get this resolved, you are going to want to contact all three credit bureaus (Trans union, Experian and Equifax) and make sure that they did not report to your bureau or if they did send them proof to remove it. Good Luck!

Sounds like you need to go in and talk to the hospital billing department. Take the payment receipt that your insurance company sent to verify payment (all insurance companies do this). If you have lost it, contact your insurance company and ask for a duplicate copy.

You can look up the Attorney General in the Google search and it will tell you exactly how to email his office
